What makes Race Point unique?
Race Point and Herring Cove are the largest beaches in Provincetown. Race Point is unique, with a national park ranger station on a grass hill above the beach. I've always thought it looked like something from an Andrew Wyeth painting.
Race Point is unique in several other ways. The beach sits right above the Provincetown Airport. It also has a vast stretch of grasslands that separate the beach from the parking lot, and it is a pretty good hike over to the beach if you have lots of gear. The beach is wide and a little steeper than some other Cape beaches. The Race Point Lighthouse is located at the point of Cape Cod and provides a hefty hike for the adventurous. It is a 2.7-mile hike along Pole Line Road and the beach, a little over three miles.
There are large parking lots here and spaces for RV's. You can also get a permit to drive your RV out on the beach and set up camp.
This Atlantic beach has stronger waves than Herring Cove, and it can be quite brutal in storms. See the photos below that we took after a particularly nasty Nor'easter.
The National Park Service does a great job of maintaining the facilities here. The parking lot, the stairs, the restrooms, and the bathhouse are in great shape.
